the best of the countries natural and cultural heritage. These
outstanding wilderness areas preserve large numbers of plant
and animal species, and nearly all of the existing habitats
of the entire world. The range is wide, consisting of natural
and cultural assets, geological and geophysical features,
historic and archaeological sites and islands vital to conservation
for nesting birds. The last remaining stands of the Mesoamerican
tropical dry forest still grow in protected areas. Beaches
